I know whereof they speak. I currently commute from Concord, CA to
Mountain View -- a distance of about 55 miles. It is, to be frank, a
bloody pain in the butt, but the job is pretty cool so I put up with
it.

Until recently I had a 72 TR-6 and a 72 Beetle that I used to drive to
work -- the Beetle to drive when Sybil (The 'often Fawlty' TR-6) was
sick. I just traded the Beetle (and a (small) pile of money) for a
Jetta.

This is very nice. I drive in comfort, without cold drafts up my
pants or rain dripping down my collar (not that we've had much rain
lately, but that's a topic for another list...) The heater works. The
air conditioner works. I can hear the radio. I am not so completly
whipped at the end of the day.

Am I getting old or what? I'm seriously thinking of selling Sybil,
because I am not having any time to look after her, or drive her.
Pulling the cover off just to go down to the hardware store on a
weekend hardly seems worth the trouble anymore.

Maybe it's the hrorrible weekend I just had -- Son has strep, I have
strep, daughter has ear infection, wife has strep and broke her foot
saturday -- making me cynical this monday morning, but while I'm
driving a hundred and ten miles to and from work every day, driving a
cantankerous LBC just doesn't seem like fun anymore.

It's still great when we get someone to watch the kids and Alene and I
roar off to do something fun, but that's not happening a lot -- kids
need attention, yard needs attention, housework needs doing; I need to
finish the paper for that conference -- et bloody cetera.

If I were rich I'd just put her up for the duration, but I already
have a '51 Bentley on blocks in the garage for when I cash in my stock
options (:-)). My wife says we don't need 2 inoperative British Cars
and I'm starting to agree with her.

Now what do I do?
