How about the original VW bus, the one where they used the regular bug engine
and transmission, and put a little reduction gearbox on each drive wheel?

    I had a friend who crisscrossed the country in an RV back in the 70s.  He
used to dread coming up behind a VW bus, because - gutless as his RV was - 
those buses would go up the hill slower than he could stand, and he'd have to
pass....
