    If you run an engine with the valve cover off, you can "feel" the valve
that's causing the ticking.  Just feel the center of the rocker arm, right over
the shaft.  The "shock" of the ticking will be transmitted right into your
finger.  

   I had a friend who tried to do this with a Mercedes.  Strangely, the valve
cover was a serious-looking alloy casting with machined edges, instead of the
usual cheesy stamping.  He said "Oh, well, its a Mercedes..." and started the
engine.  That sucker squirted a jet of oil twenty feet across the garage!
