Duel point distributers {If memory serves me} is geared so that the dist. cam
runs at half speed.  This eliminates high speed point bounce. You have two 
sets of points to set {kind of like dealing with SUs} and replace.  If your
car spends time over 5 or 6K RPM the Mallery duel pt dist. would not cause
loss of voltage or timing problems due to point bounce.  Below 5 or 6K RPM,
the second set of points are just a questionable status symbol that is 
something additional to adjust or go wrong.

The Mallery will come with a performance curve.  This may help you accelerate 
faster.  But, if you go to the right people, the curve in your distributer
can be readjusted.  You didn't say what car this is for.  The TR3 distributer
already has a sporty curve. Playing with the curve on SOMG equiped cars
can cause them to go out of spec (Opps sorry thats SMOG to you non dislexic 
people}.

Optical conversions-
If you are not a 100.1% showroom stock purist, an optical conversion makes
a lot of sense, pays for itself over time in increased petrol milage and
cost of points. You set them once, set your timing & forget about that sort
of thing. 

If you use points, you set them up, and adjust the timing. You naver race on
a new set of points because there tends to be rapid wear at first. When the po
point gap[ changes due to wear and or pitting, or not tightning the points
down tight enough] the timing goes off and the voltage going to the spark plus
changes {gets less if point gap is less}.  All this affects your power, petrol
milage and emmissions.  For optimal all these things, you should check points
frequently.  This does not happen with optical points. No mess no fuss, no
going out odjustment from wear. the only problem is that when they break you are
dead in the water.  They are dependable but generally not roadside repairable.
I had them in my Saab & carried a spare optical ignition just in case. Some
people carry the parts to convert back to points in case of road side emergency.


RE: original distributer.  IF it is worn you can get them rebuilt. It would
work well with your car.  It would not cut the resale value of your car.
