  I can't help with the gears at all.  Terry says it's a real pain in the A$$.
But, if memory serves me correctly, the axles can be pulled fairly easily.
Pull the drums, then remove the 4 bolts holding the grease seals and backing
plates to the axle housing.  Now just pull - I believe I used a hub puller.
(A foot that bolts to the lugnuts and then a slide hammer screws into the
foot.  Slide the hammer out, and out comes the axle.)
