John: If your skins are off I would first rebuild EVERYTHING inside the
door. Now is the time to fix it even if it aint broke! There will never be
as easy a time to modify your regulators and window mounting system. Once
that is all done, I painted the inside of the door with POR then prepped and
painted the interior portion of the door (oops I of course trial fit the
door, bent, tweaked, reinforced, welded......... before I started). Once the
paint was dry I glued on the door weatherstrips and pushed on the birdcage
strips. I then bolted up the door and got it to close(it took a fair amount
of force). I then centered it in the opening and walked away for two weeks
to let the weatherstrips collapse and take a set. Now is the time to do your
final fitting. I then laid the skins on the frames for trial fit and
massaged them just a little to even out gaps. Glue up comes next, as soon as
I can find the time I will do that! I did all my fitting with the skins off
so I could 'cheat' them a little if I had to. Did I say make sure the
windows work perfectly before you put the skins on? Make sure! Also now is
the time to change the wire that powers the solenoid. Hoffman and probably
tanner have NOS originals at reasonable prices. also I change my solenoids
to
the late GM style. They are little electric motors that are weather tight
and pull more at lower draw than the originals. they also weigh about half
as much which makes a big difference once you multiply the distance from the
hinge.
