I recently bought my used 2004 from the volatile market.  The prices aren't 
quite as crazy as you described.  Some of the confusion may be the various 
"packages" some cars have, often tacking on $2-$3k, but you shouldn't pay more 
than $23k for a pretty loaded, low mileage 2004 MCS.
