I prefer the Southern route if trailering because the highest elevations seem
fewer and lower. Highway 54 from Tucumcari to Wichita cuts some miles off of
the "all interstate route.
If the weather's good, I like the I-70 Route as long as I'm not towing
(unless it's a little utility trailer) as it's far and away the most
interesting. I go through Salt Lake City on this route to avoid Hwy. 50 (the
loneliest road in the world.)
The Northern route is only a few miles shorter than the Southern route and in
addition to harder climbs, every time I've gone through denver seems to be
rush hour. If I go North (under duress from co-drivers or co-caravanners), I
prefer to go into Nebraska on 80, then drop down to 70 on 2 lane roads (there
are several choices...)
