<< I kicked around some ideas with catalytic converter/emissions research,
and
another idea that came to mind was mount some strain gauges on a motor
block
and see how it reacts to various (and excessive) loads, and also do some
research into thin films coating on frictional surfaces (swaintech coatings

on main bearings for one example). Ideas, thoughts? Any help is greatly
 appreciated. Thanks!

Do something with carbon fiber. Something like fender flares for a Camaro or

a hood
and decklid. You might as well think about materials on the cutting edge as
oppossed to doing engine stuff. Figure a way to do cheap and easy carbon lay

ups
at home and write a manuel on where to get the stuff and how to do it.

Ceramics and/or high strength polymer replacement parts would be even
cooler, literally. Imagine polymer connecting rods, pistons and valvetrain
parts. Talk about little to no reciprocating weight!! And far less oil
would be needed to lubricate them. Ceramic pistons would be cool and light
weight too.

How about adapting something like the F1 pneumatic valves or Ducati's
desmodromic valve system into an auto engine to get rid of valve springs and
all their short comings.

Or more feasibly you could work on a variable length/volume air intake
plenum that boosts low end torque as well as high end HP. think solenoids
to move one piece of tubing/box into and out of another piece to increas and
decrease the volume. Some of the dual runner intakes (which basically do
the same thing) that are available, like on the new ACR Neons, are way cool
but we want MORE!! Talk to some of the F1 racing teams and their various
suppliers and consultants to find out what kind of trickle-down technology
can be feasible for street cars.

Oh wait, you need something cheap and easy. Hmm, how about proving once and
for all how much additional power a "Type R" sticker and/or a 5" chrome
exhaust tip can gain the average car. ;^)
