Since I have owned and used a HANS type-1 (the bigger, more bulky original,
not the smaller units now available) in 36 SCCA races, I can comment. I
used it in a VW GTI, a Spec Racer and a Neon SSC car. The two sedans had
windows at least as small as the NASCAR racers I believe. With these cars
I practiced escaping out the window with the HANS on. Not a problem, and
not much different from getting out without it. The main problem is
getting your butt out of a racing seat, and legs out, _not_ your head.

I do agree that the _fear_ of fire does have something to do with the
acceptance of this device. But with current fire systems, fire is no longer
the problem it used to be. Protection from the initial impact has higher
priority. If you are injured in the impact, getting out could be a real
problem.
