Why can't we just manually add the RT+ET when we enter the times in the
computer. Yeah it will take a little longer, but it IS WHAT WE WANT, RIGHT?
As far as display goes... Won't the displays show both anyway?
Here the only inconvienient thing is that we need to add. We already do it
when it comes to adding our best left and best right in impound.

The poll results don't surprise me at all. I'd like to have all the
features
of the new system and also retain the things we all liked about the old
one too, but the fact is it simply couldn't be done. I got the chance to
talk to Howard about the new system while I was in Denver this past
weekend for the SEB meetings at the SCCA convention. Here's what I
found out.
The timing system we have been using is the original system that was
built when Pro Solo was "invented" in 1985. While it has served us
well, its age and the maintenance problems associated with that age
have caught up with us. There was real concern as to whether it would
function properly at the finale in Topeka last year without some sort of
major failure.
Acquiring a new timing system has been a priority during the
off season. In talking to various suppliers of race timing equipment,
it was quickly apparent that there were no off-the-shelf systems that
could be easily adapted to do all the things that we would like such a
system to do. The only way to have it ALL was a one-off custom timing
system, and time and cost considerations made that impractical. It
appeared that the most bang for our buck was to begin with a drag-race-
based system and modify it to be able to time 2 cars on course at a time
(something drag-race timers don't normally have to do). This modification
is why we can't have R/T + E/T, as we have in the past, and also have
2 cars "on the clock" at the same time. In the Challenge, when there is
only one car at a time on each course, the reaction time can be included
in total time. I'm not a programmer, so please don't come back with
all the reasons that this "should" be doable.....I know Howard well enough
to know that if there was a way to do it within the time and $$ that he had
available, he would have done it.
There are a number of new features with this system, some of which will
make it easier for those of us who work in timing, reduce mistakes, and
make the event run more smoothly. Later this year we will have larger
outside displays that will give additional information on reaction times and
time differentials in the Challenge.
I think those of us who go to Ft Myers ought to see how it works before
we register any more complaints. And if you don't like something about
it then, constructive criticism would be nice instead of just complaints....
