Wendell,

Welcome to C Mod. Where are you located?

A lot of guys run a low 40's mph first, a mid 50's second, a mid to high
60's third, and a mid 80's fourth (all gearing/mph calcs assume 6800 rpm
redline even though we tend to rev to 7 sometimes). Most "National" style
courses use the mid to high 60's gear most of the time. Note that the gears
for the mid 50's second are prone to break, even with a 9/31 r&p so
sinceyou have a 10/31 I suggest you talk with Craig Taylor to get good
advice. He is also a good source of trustworthy used gears. You will need a
fixed first gear unless the Staffs is different from the Hewlands most of
us have. Note that the rear tire diameter is about 22.5 inches.

I run a 46 mph first, a 66 mph second, a 78 mph third, and a 103 mph fourth
(for those non SCCA events with very long straights). I use first for the
really tight corners, second for almost everything else, and third for the
fastest "SCCA" straights.

You should get some more input when the rest of the class get back to work
on Monday and have time to deal with e-mail. <grin>
