I made up some wheels 30 years ago for my series I that may be the best
of both worlds. I used the GM Corvair rim (I don't remember the rim
width, maybe 5.5" wide) and mated it to an Alpine wheel center. I took
the eight rims to a machine shop, and he turned out the Corvair centers
and the Alpine outer rim. He pressed them together, aligned them and
welded them together. Now they are very noticeable wider than the old
narrow Alpine rim and never had any problems.
