        Dwayne:

Routing is more likely the problem than the cable length. The 74.5
cars used the standard speedo cable. The other cable listed is for the models
with the EGR counter. If your car does not have an EGR light on the dash, you
need the earlier one piece cable.
Do you have an overdrive? If you do, you may be missing the little
gizmo called an "angle drive". This fits between the tranny and the cable, and
allows you to route the cable much more efficiently. If yours is missing, it
would explain why your cable seems too short. If this is not the case, you may
need to simply experiment with the cable routing a bit.
One other possibility. Is the symptom that your speedometer is
"jumpy"? E.G. the needle is not showing a steady reading but instead bounces
while the car is in motion? If so, than it may be that your cable simply needs
to be lubed. If the cable gets dry, it winds up like a spring and then pops
free, causing the needle to bounce. Your "modified" cable may have solved the
problem simply because it was new and had fresh lubricant.

I've had trouble with my speedometer for a while now. It seems like the end
that goes into the transmission isn't long enough to seat properly so it
doesn't turn reliably.
