You need to adjust the height of the switch relative to the brake pedal.  If 
you look under the dash, you'll see that the brake light switch is attached to 
a bracket.  When the brake pedal swings backward (ie: when you take your foot 
off the brake), the brake pedal arm is supposed to push the switch in (opening 
the circuit), and thus the brake lights go off.  When you push down on the 
brake pedal, the brake pedal arm stops pushing against the switch, the circuit 
closes, and the brake lights go on.  

This may sound weird, but it'll make more sense when you look under the dash.

When you adjust the height of the switch, be careful not to adjust it too far 
out.  You want the brake lights to come on as soon as you touch the brakes.

just acquired a 76 tr6 and having electrical prpblems . the car seems to have 
set for a while .my ? now is that the brake light doesn't go off ,also can't 
get the headlights to go on any help is appreciated
