I have not personally done this modification; However, I
remember
reading that that the frame cracking was caused by improper setup;
The suspension must bottom out on the rubber bump stop, and not on
the shock. As I recall if the shock bottoms out then there is a
twisting moment applied to the frame, and it will crack. If the
suspension bottoms out on the rubber bump stop, there is no
twisting moment, and the frame will stay healthy.
At least, that is what I remember reading. The usual caveats
apply...

i don't understand why so many people want to
"upgrade" to the rear tube shock conversion kit. when
my shocks were tired, it was recommended to me to do
the conversion. it sounded like a good idea, and i
even think it was a little cheaper than getting new
lever-arm shocks. unfortunatley a lot of TR6 and TR250
owners are learning the hard way that it's a
downgrade. did you know that, under normal driving
conditions, your frame can crack at the shock mounts?
