Sean,

Try "Flitz" paste. This has a good cleaning agent & mild abrasive that 
should remove any surface yellowing or contaminants that bond to the 
plastic. You'll find this stuff can be used on a million other things . 
Even though the problem seems to be on the out side I recommend cleaning 
the interior side as well. This should make a big difference as long as 
the plastic has not yellowed through.
Another product that's hard to find is PLEXUS aerosol. This works very 
well too. Not as abrasive , cleans chemically. Great for normal maintenance.
