no, Mike, I hadn't considered the bad throwout bearing possibility, which
would be a pleasant one (though of course it would put me deep into the
Gunst bearing discussions ...).

Actually, your idea makes a lot of sense, because the transmission otherwise
is very good, whereas the clutch is only OK -- some shudder, late engagement
-- indicating that it's got some miles on it, which could help account for a
noisy bearing.

on the other hand, in my previous TR6, I also had a similar amount of noise
idling in neutral, and I'd replaced the clutch, bearing, etc. myself.

One other minor mystery involving my "missing" OD -- the top plate of the
replacement transmission contains all the correct O/D lockout switches. So
is it possible that the DPO bought a replacement on-OD tranny and put back
the old top plate?

Thanks to you and other listers for the thoughts. In view of the fact that
my TR is not a pristine example, I'm not sure if it's worth putting a $2,000
gearbox/OD in it ... so I may sell it later this spring. However, I WILL
disclose that it doesn't have an OD!

Vink,

I got into this thread late but have you considered the possibility that the
noise in neutral is coming from the throw out bearing. It's a lot simpler
to fix than a transmision rebuild. I always hope that the problem is the
one with the simplest and cheapest solution.
