My two cents...
I thought I read somewhere on this list that the corner supports on the back
wall were structural and should not be touched.

I had 6 1/2 inch speakers back there once, but there's a few problems.
First the panel isn't very sturdy, so you can't put too much power to
speakers, or it will vibrate. Second, there's not much room between
the panel and the gas tank. I ended up placing the speakers down in
the corners, where there's a gap between the gussets and the tank.
Third, it's not really a good location for speakers acoustically,
because the speakers aren't isolated from each other. Not a big deal
for the everyday user, but if you want serious sound and power, it
won't work for you.

I ended up ditching that setup, and putting 6x9's in boxes on the rear
shelf, hooked to a 50x2 RMS amp in the trunk, and a Sony CD player in
the dash. Now I can hear my music loud and clear even with the top
down at 70mph!

Problem with this setup is that the boxes are too small to allow the
speakers to really perform well. There's not much bass sound. The
next upgrade will be to put in 6 1/2 or 5 1/4 separates, woofers in the
kick panels and tweeters on the dash or in the upper corners of the
windshied. Small bass tube on the parcel shelf if I need a bit more
bass sound. 50x2 RMS amp if the separates are sufficient, or 40x4 RMS
amp if I go with the tube (with rear channels bridged to send 80x1 to
the bass tube).
