Jim---The 'book' suggests 4 deg. ATDC when the vacuum retard line is
connected to the canister. If yours is connected AND working, it is the
same as setting the timing at 8 deg. BTDC with this line disconnected
(and plugged) Check yours by pulling this line off with the engine
idling. If it slows down and the timing retards, it is seeing vacuum
from the carburetor and is working as designed. Many do not connect this
line, and simply plug it, and set the timing to somewhere between 6 and
12 deg. BTDC depending on other variables in the engine. Your choice.

Others who also had a problem when installing the Pertronics seem to
have resolved this and are now back using it. Maybe they'll share the
info.
