I had a similar gasoline odor - turned out to be a slightly leaking fuel hose where it clamps to the fuel pipe behind the left rear wheel-well. Meanwhile, I'm following your gauge saga with interest

I've worked out what causes petrol the smell in the boot, there is a tube with a blanking cap on mine, this I think is where you can put an emmission control system. It is blanked off on the UK ones,

Ken, there are two wires that go to the sender. One is black and is the ground. The other is colored. Remove the colored one and short it to the ground while watching the guage (2 people work best).
