Ken,
I had a similar gasoline odor - turned out to be a slightly leaking fuel
hose where it clamps to the fuel pipe behind the left rear wheel-well.
Meanwhile, I'm following your gauge saga with interest; my gauge reads a
light 1/8 continually - even with the fuel topped off (always has). If you
have success, that'll encourage me to put GAS-GAUGE near the top of my
lengthly list.
