Okay, here's part II. I went and took a look at the rear end and was flabbergasted (and horrified) to see the axle coming out of the rear end on the left side. The left rear wheel is sticking out alm

It looks like the ball bearing that holds the stub axle in the differential disintegrated. That bearing takes all the outward thrust loads. In theory, you can replace the bearing without taking the e

That was my first thought/hope. But no, the bearing retention plate is in place with the four allen bolts. Something internal on the diff let go... Ugh, I really hate the thought of having to remove

I hope you can disassemble and find the clip that holds the bearing in place on the stub shaft. I have changed these brg's and found it quite difficult to remove the brg. from the shaft. While you'r

Yes, to replace the bearing you'll need an hydraulic press and a strong plate or else you'll bend the flange if the plate does not really curve around the shaft as you push the bearings on and off th

I was under the impression there was a circlip on the shaft, just inside the bearing. If the clip came out of the groove it may still be there on the shaft So pull the bearing plate carefully. Paul T

I disagree that the bearings disintegrated. If you check the service manual, you'll see that the whole short shaft is held in place by a circlip (#12 in Haynes, page 191). Looks like it let go. You m

Wish it was that easy, Paul. But it looks to be a broken or displaced circlip holding the stub axle inside the differential, allowing the axle to slip out far enough to where the differential can't e

I agree that this sounds like the differential to me. If the transmission is absolutely positively engaging, then the differential is the next culprit. Jack up the rear of the car with both rear whee
