You need to push the pistons in far enough that the top (open end) of the piston is just about flush with the caliper. Don't open the bleed screw or you'll run the risk of pulling air back into the

JoeIf a mondo pry bar won't push the pistons back into the caliper, you've probably got a major case-o-rust on the pistons. Put one of your old pads back in and a thin piece of something like a pain
