I was able to undo the nut by using a 32 mm socket and a long enough combination of breaker bar plus steel tube. The problem may be avoiding the wheel to turn... but the socket shouldn't be damaged.

Go to Sears and buy a 1-1/4" socket. I don't know if they have one in 1/2" drive but they certainly have them in stock in 3/4" drive. You may jump on the breaker bar and not hurt the nut using a 32

I agree with the 1 1/4 socket size. I had the same problem - mine had not been removed in 25 years. I put a breaker bar with a 8' pipe over the handle and it came off very easily. The inch size seem
