Sorry to bomb the list by it's difficult to listen to the speculation about the Pressure relief valve located above the oil pump. It's a pressure relief valve with a spring calibrated to dump oil bac

I've had the pressure relief valve fail on a race motor. I was lucky and "heard it" and I saw the oil pressure dropped to low numbers - 20 psi at 4000 RPMs. I only wrecked one rod bearing. There see

Doesn't this just provide some increase in maximum oil pressure acting on the fiter? As far as I know, the spring/ball affair is not a pressure regulator, it is a bypass. The bypass comes into play o

i have no clue but i have heard that if the spring gets weak you get lower pressure. so a stiffer spring might help. mine will probably get lost b4 i ever get the chance to use it in the future. -- O

...but, if the spring in the pressure relief valve is weak from years of use then it would allow more oil to bypass causing an overall reduced oil pressure reading. Does this make sense? Aaron Crople

Hi Aaron: True enough. I was writing more about the notion that if you put a spring stronger than stock it will somehow raise your oil pressure on a worn engine. I seem to remember in 1986 putting a
