Not so sure about the oil filter before the first attempts at cranking. Renewing it creates a long delay before any oil reaches the bearings, oil with high water content is much better than no oil at

The SAE ratings for engine and gear oils are not directly comparable. Gearboxes designed for use with gear oils shouls be run with gear oils. O/D boxes that I know of are specified for use with gear
