I didn't see that auction go down, nor did I see the car, so I was unaware of the sale! The sale is not surprising as there was an Amphicar that sold a year or two ago for something like $70K, or so.

it has a sliding spline joint that allows it to float - and that joint is secured by a screw-on collar that will keep it from sliding apart at the limit of its travel - unless you unscrew the collar
