Why do people rewire their cars to use a kludged non-Lucas alternator when Delco has an alternator designed for the Spitfire?? I'm planning on dumping my Lucas this spring when the weather gets good

Depends on how fast your going, I would guess. Back in the 70's, I could pivot my 914 around one front wheel making the turning radius the length of the car. Tires don't last long doing that, though
