I had this problem on my 58. Turned out to be the connection terminal on the starter motor for the cable was shorting to the starter case. The terminal is isolated from the case by plastic (nylon?).

I have this problem with my car. The bleeders aren't rusty but air leaks past them even when slightly cracked. I'll try the anti-seize compound, sounds like a good solution to the problem. Ron 58 MGA
