In the Brown Book you'll find that the ignition warning lamp is listed as 2.5V 0.5W, however you're quite right that it will work fine with 12V and no resistor - our J2 has been like that for 30 year

I don't know about the TD, but in the TC Toolbox there is a wooden block about 1X1Xwidth of box. It's screwed to the bottom about 1/4 way from the right side and I think it's a locator for the jack.
