The coil is rated for around 8 volts. Applying a full 12 volts will destroy the coil. The ballast resister drops approximately 4 volts so the coil receives its rated 8 volts. When cranking the batter

Check the boss (the thing the cable screws onto) on the back of the speedo. If it gets loose it will wobble and bind the magnetic coupling. I had this happen on my tach some years back. Take it apart
