I found that the type that screws on from the top tend to allow the oil to drain back into the crank if the engine is not run frequently. This means a 10 to 15 second period at start up with no oil

First, much of the complexity of the CD175 on your TR7 is the result of trying to meet EPA standards I would guess that a Holly of the same period would also be more complex than one from the 60's.
