In case you do not have the manual:
To adjust the play out of the steering box Remove the tie rods from the
drop arm so the wheel turns freely. On the top of the box is a screw ( or
bolt) with a lock nut , loose the lock nut and start tightening the screw
down. Once you feel the screw make contact turn the wheel from lock to lock.
At the center spot ( wheel as if the car was going straight ) you will
feel a tight ( High ) spot. Adjust the screw until you can turn the wheel
past this spot with only 12 inch pounds of pressure . Tighten the lock nut.
My trick in doing this is to adjust the screw so the wheel just hangs up a
little on the high spot. Clamp a yard stick to the wheel so one leg is
pointing at ten oclock . Hang a one pound weight on the yard stick one
foot from the center of the wheel .Back off on the adjustment screw slowly
until the wheel turns by itself under the weight of the one pound weight.
If you can feel two high spots, one at 11:00 and the other at 1:00 o'clock
, the cam is worn and you may not get the play all out .
Bob Nogueira ( who has been known to have a few loose screws)
