If you are seeing that much play in the diff., and there appears to be no slop in the u-joints, then I would suspect a bad pinion gear, and lots of work. The best way to check for this is to put the

My Spit had this problem once, I would drive down the road, and as soon as the fuel lines got warm, the car would stall. It turned out that when I changed the fuel filter, I put a half twist in them.
