Hi Arch,
' Haven't seen that name around here for awhile. Dave Lively was the PO =
of my car and yes, he had it converted to Datsun five-speed. He wrote =
an article about it in the ZMG newsletter back in the early '90s - =
before we were online. There were a lot of highly detailed notes that =
came with the car. A couple of problems here: Dave did NOT(much to his =
credit!) do this conversion himself. It was done by a well-known =
California British mechanic whose name I will not mention. There was a =
receipt in the paper work for a "Novus Five Points" conversion kit. But =
what came out when I split the engine and transmission could not have =
been professionally built and/or marketed. The backplate was the crudest =
piece of home-made junk I have ever seen. Dave's records show some =
transmission problems and the entire case cracked and had to be replaced =
- twice, I believe. I suspect this was due to a backplate that did not =
center the transmission on the crankshaft.=20
There was no drilled pilot bushing - but one that rather had been =
hand-reamed with a conical reamer. The idea must have been for the pilot =
bushing to support the nose of the transmission first-motion shaft at =
the very front edge only. But the inside reamed surface of the pilot =
bushing was very rough. There were some rather threatening noises =
occurring when the engine idled while in neutral. The flywheel itself =
was not MG - perhaps it was Datsun. The bolt pattern was wrong and it =
had been redrilled to fit the MG crankshaft pattern. This made for a lot =
of bolt holes on the flywheel and it was not perfectly centered (another =
cause of the case cracking?). In the world of aesthetics, the shifter =
turret was left out. I took all this junk out, replacing it all with a =
complete Rivergate kit (and a correct turret). In defense of these =
guys, I will offer that the Rivergate kit was probably not yet available =
back in those days. But with the same engine and transmission, now =
connected through the Rivergate kit, everything is beautiful. The one =
thing I saved from the original installation was the transmission =
crossmember - practically identical to the one Rivergate had built for =
my first Magnette. =20

Also note that I tilted the lever up a bit on it's front bracket. It =

280Z was Rivergate's choice and their kit will not fit the others. They =
liked the extreme durability of the 280Z - as it was designed to handle =
the six-cylinder engine. They do have kits designed to fit the 210 =
five-speed to "A block" engines. Designed for Spridgets, I believe they =
also adapt well in Morris Minors. I keep my eye out for these on =
occasion and have dreams of my own MM 4-door with a 1275, a =
Rivergate/210 five-speed, a Spridget 3.9 diff, and Spridget discs up =
front. The trick is to FiND a 210 5-speed. And for that matter, the =
280Z 5-speeds are drying up also. BTW, there is some activity in the BW =
T5 bull pen. We may have another option before long. Hopefully =
somebody who knows more than I will speak to this.

Compare a 3 sync MGB with a 4 sync. The transmission tunnel is =

wider than the 3 sync. Compare a 3 sync MGB with a 4 =

The transmission tunnel is noticeably different. I've =

sync in and early MGB and it takes a lot of work with a BIG =
hammer to=20
move sheet metal around. Even then, its still a tight =
fit. =20
I can't imagine a Magnette would be any easier.</div>
