Hmmm... I could be setting myself up for a pummeling (sp?) on this one
but here goes...
We have been running a Vintage Program as part of our Florida Region
SCCA Regional Races since 1987 and have only revised the vehicle safety
requirements once - to require fuel cells and arm restraints/window
nets. Aside from these and the drivers equipment, a Vintage car needs
an approved roll BAR (must be 2" above top of driver's helmet in open
cars), a fire extinguisher, master electrical cut-off switch and 5-6
point safety harness system. HOWEVER, we STRONGLY recommend a full
interior cage and onboard fire system for obvious reason. The
distinction that must be made are that the latter two are
recommendations only...
If I go read the Vintage/Historic GCRs (which we helped write back in
1988) I may find some contradictions but Vintage, being a Regional
class, may vary from Region to Region... This is particularly true when
it comes to vehicle eligibility and preparation allowances. We remain
fairly strict in Florida by accepting only period authentically prepared
vehicles manufactured prior to 1973. For more on our program and basic
philosophy, visit my web page at http://www.netcom.com/~nobozos/ and go
to the SCCA Vintage section.
That's my two cents!!!
