As others have noted, earlier cars had the switch at the top, including
TS13571L and TS39781LO.
However, ISTR reading or hearing somewhere that some earlier cars had the
rheostat fitted by the factory. You might check one of Bill Piggott's books
and see if he mentions it.
Note that the instrument panel itself is slightly different, as the rheostat
requires a larger D-shaped hole than the switch does.
