My car has developed a "miss" and it seems to be tied to fuel delivery.
Here's what I've noticed:
- After a short drive the fuel filter is empty. Doesn't the pump draw/pull
gas through the filter and then push it to the carbs?
- Let the car sit for an hour or two and the fuel filter goes to 3/4 full
- The "miss" seems to coincide with the filter being empty
- The pressure gauge, at idle, reads 2.0 when the filter is full and 1.5 as
it empties
- While driving the car, the gauge reads between 1.5 & 2.0. I took Randall's
suggestion and ran the gauge into the car so I could monitor it while
driving.
- Haynes manual says 1.5 - 2.0 is the spec.
- is there anything on the carb side that could be causing this? A stuck
float valve or something. Doesn't the needle valve in the float chamber open
and close to allow gas in or not?
If you all think the pump is bad or going bad, I'll probably go to an
electric pump so here's the next batch of questions:
- Should I rebuild all the mechanical pump gaskets even if I add an electric
pump?
- I believe the electric pump gets mounted back toward the fuel tank and the
mechanical pump can remain in place and connected to the fuel line. Correct?
- I assume that a fuel filter should get installed before the electric pump.
Correct?
- Moss sells an electric pump for $99 and the local auto parts store has a
Mr. Gasket pump for $40. Is there really a $50 difference in quality?
