Congrats on your new purchase! I have a '68 MKI and it's one of the most fun
cars to drive that I've ever had. I'm sure you are going to enjoy it.
I've seen some MKI that are fairly high in the front. There might be a packing
piece about a 1/4" thick under the front driver's side shock spring plate that
is giving the front some lift. I've heard these were put to compensate for the
weight of the driver and the fuel tank being on the same side. I've taken this
plate out on the 3 GT6s I've owned and it did lower the front a bit.
You can check if the back end is too low by how much camber there is to the
rear wheels. There should be a slight negative camber (top of the wheels
pointing in). If the camber is more then you probably have a weak spring.
The loose shifter is probably caused by a bad or even gone bushing at the end
of the shift lever where it attaches to the operating shaft. Again, all 3 GT6s
I've worked on needed this bushing replaced. I usually make a bronze bushing
as a replacement. The trans tunnel and the top cover of the trans would have
to come off the replace this bushing. It's easy to do and makes a lot of
difference with a new bushing.
