I had the same problem ... turns out that "down for OD" is correct and my switch
has been upside down all these years. When I disassembled the old switch, I
found it had the mounting tube upside down relative to the new switch (thus
making the entire switch body upside down when the tube was installed into the
dash). I could have done the same thing to the new switch, but I found I could
unsolder one of the wires and solder it to the other contact instead. I opted
to move the wire.
