Sounds like it is held in place by corrosion since the cap is steel and the
gear box extension is aluminum. A little penetrating oil and some time will go
a long way. Be careful with the pipe wrench. You don't want to crimp the
steel cap which would be counterproductive. Try tapping with a small hammer
and
a drift to try to turn it in either direction. Once it starts to move it
will come off fairly easily.
