When I came from my home state of California in my '68 MGB to New Hampshire
(just to visit a friend...hmmm.), I was stopped by a cop who wanted to
question why I didn't have an inspection sticker and a NH plate yet. Nice
guy about it, though. When he asked for my registration, I kept my hands in
clear view and told him, "Don't get excited, I'm going to open the battery
tray and get it." His eyes got big as saucers as I lifted the rug, popped
the wingnut holding the cover on the battery box engineered under the rumble
seat, and pulled my paperwork out of a homemade box I'd carpeted on the
inside."
"What's that?" he asked.
Then I explained how the car came with such two 6 volt batteries, but now
had one 12 volt in the other box. That was 1979, and I could see him
wondering how many other MGBs had hidden contraband in a battery box like
that!
