The pinion, ring gear and carrier are all mounted in the front half of the
case similar to a Ford 9 inch - these are known as removable "pumpkin" type
differentials. You can do the same with an 8 or 9 inch ford - you simply
remove the axles and drop the pumpkin with all gears and bearings intact -
you can then change the gears, bearings etc, on the bench without removing
the axle housing from the car -
you still have to remove the inner axles to get the front half of the diff
off, still a pain in the arse :-) but not impossible -
