How do these sleeves work? Are they a cylinder or a strip of metal. What
about bonding?

Note that "bad" is a relative term, in this location I'd say anything you
can catch a fingernail in is "bad".  And, I've seen some leak where you
could only see the wear mark, not feel it even with a fingernail.  So, I
always dress it with crocus cloth until I can't see the wear mark, or else
put on a sleeve.
