Has anyone tried white LEDs for this application? They're probably not very 
cheap, but you shouldn't have any fail before the next major restoration in 
2043...

You could probably make up a little mould to cast them into a plug of clear 
epoxy to fit the bulb opening at the back of the gauge. That'd be neat...

Using the part listed below you'd need a voltage dropper - but maybe there are 
12 - 15 V LEDs available? There 5 mm LEDs are $5 each, probably less in quantity

If you wanted to be cute you could pack a green and an orange LED in there as 
well, loom them to a dimmer and then have switchable instrument colour lighting!
