Well I think I've just paid my last visit to Pep Boys!
What A__ h__s!
I had purchased a GM/Delco alternator to swap into my GT6
about a month ago. Getting ready to install it I noticed the pulley
was EXtremely small compared to all my other conversions thus far
The pulley on this one was only 2.25" vs most at 2.6-2.7"
So I went back to Pep Boys to show the guy at the counter
(20+ year veteran of the parts counter there and proud of it...so it
shows you his 'intellectual skills.) What a jerk!
All I asked for was to have him check some of the other units to see
if they had one with a larger pulley "... like all the other ones I've
bought from you.." and all he could say is " just swap the pulleys
with your old one". "No way" I said "If I'm buying a complete unit
from you, why should I have to 'work on it' before I can install it"
So I went to the front counter and returned it. ...also told the manager
what an a--h--- the counter guy was, and that they were selling the wrong
parts to people.
I stopped by the newer AutoZone on my way home. EXCELLENT
service. Cheaper, better warranty, NOT a rebuilt unit, and NO CORE CHARGE.
The damn alternator was even in bubble wrap inside the box! Life time free
replacement...no questions asked for a 64 amp alternator.
The kid (16-18 years old) that pulled the alternator off the shelf for me
at AutoZone knew more about the '73 MG BGT sitting out front
I was driving, than the 50 year old Pep Boys counter guy knew about
hooking up the alternator to the test bench they had there at Schlep Boys.
20 years...what the heck's he been doing!
I don't impress easily.... but these guys were great! I mentioned my
problem
with pulley size..... and while checking out.... damn if the two other guys
didn't open up 6 more alternators to see if they were all the same size
pulleys. They even looked at slight 'application' variations to see if
there
was any differences. Nope, none, nadda! Only the current output ratings
were different ('78 Chevy Camaro, 305, A/C, no A/C) 42, 54, 65 amp
Needless to say... I'm a very happy camper right now!
and A.Z. has a new and regular customer.
