Having worked on both types, I'll say that the A-type is beefier and
easier to work on, but it is definitely a little more work to
get/keep running. The solenoid is fairly tricky, and parts are more
expensive.
The J-type is more common; you can find them on, among other things,
Volvo 240s, so obtaining cheap spares/replacements should be easy.
A-types, on the other hand, are fairly unusual, especially when you
want/need one! Parts for A's are pricey new or used.
I believe either of the two will serve you well, if given proper care
- keep the oil properly filled and the solenoid properly adjusted.
I drove my first car (a 1976 Volvo 245 with J-type OD) into the
ground (18 years old/200,000 miles when rear-ended by a minivan at 35
MPH), and that overdrive worked perfectly as long as there was oil.
Should you decide to switch to a J-type, you should immediately box
up the A-type and ship it to me. It would be great karma. ;)
HTH,
Dan
