Rob,
I have a J type in my '76 TR6 and an A Type in a TR250 plus a spare for my
'70TR6 when I get it running. I've rebuilt both types. I managed to get
some metal in the J type (smashed countershaft bearing) and screwed up the
pump and the sleeve that rides on the cam on the mainshaft. I thought those
parts were much less rugged that the comparable parts on the A Type,
especially the sleeve that replaces a much more rugged roller & spring
arrangement. As far as the rest of it --- didn't see much difference. The
J type solenoid is much nicer --- no adjustments. The solenoid mounting on
the J type is more rugged than the cast tabs on the A Type cover plate to
which the solenoid mounts. The gears, bearings, etc seem about the same.
The J type can only be used on the '73 and later frames because the rear
mounting is a couple inches further back. Of course, one could use the
later mounting on an early frame. . I guess if I had a choice, I'd use
the A type.
