Rick:
Whenever I encounter a new problem with my car, I consider undoing the
last thing I did just before the problem appeared. Why not disconnect
the alternator to rule out a bad bearing? Since the fan belt
removal/replacement can be a PITA, tie wrap it to the cross member and
go for a drive. Bearings can make high pitch sounds only at certain
speeds and be fine at other speeds.
Anyway, that's where I would start. I'm sure you'll hear more expert
comments from others on the list.
